Authorities allege a woman attempted to smuggle drugs into the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections by hiding them in a pair of dress shoes. Four people were charged as a result, including the woman and three others.
Four people have been charged after Louisville authorities said suspected drugs were found inside a pair of dress shoes being sent to the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections, according to WAVE. The alleged plan involved concealing the drugs in the shoes, with the items intended to be delivered into the jail population.
WAVE reported that officials said the effort was tied to an attempt to get contraband into the LMDC, a facility that houses people awaiting trial and serving sentences in Jefferson County. If convicted, the charges would add to a growing body of cases centered on attempts to introduce controlled substances into correctional settings through mail or other delivery routes.
The WAVE story identified four defendants facing drug trafficking charges: Kevon Lawless, Michael Bullock, Joseph Hale, and Breonna Kannamore. The report said the suspected drugs were discovered in the shoes, which were headed to LMDC as part of the attempted delivery.
According to the reporting, the case was handled through law enforcement action that led to multiple charges, reflecting that investigators did not view the incident as limited to a single person or a single handoff. The inclusion of three additional defendants indicates authorities allege more than one participant in the packaging, arrangement, or delivery of the contraband attempt.
WAVE did not indicate in its report what substance was found or the amount, nor did it outline the specific counts in the charging documents. The case also was not described in detail with respect to when the shoes were intercepted, who initiated the investigation, or what evidence beyond the contraband itself linked each defendant to the alleged scheme.
As the matter moves forward, the defendants will have the opportunity to contest the allegations in court. Prosecutors are expected to rely on evidence from the seizure of the shoes and the investigation that connected the defendants to the attempted drug shipment.
The case also underscores how correctional facilities in Kentucky and across the country monitor attempts to introduce illegal drugs, including through items sent to inmates or other routes that can be exploited before intake screening. Details about the legal process, such as upcoming hearings and arraignments, would come from court records as the case progresses.
