Darializa Avila Chevalier, a newly elected House member who defeated incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.) in her district’s primary, said she would need to check with constituents before supporting House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries if Democrats win the majority.
Darializa Avila Chevalier said Saturday that she would need to consult her community before deciding whether to back House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for Speaker, should Democrats regain the House majority. The remarks come after her successful primary bid last week, when she defeated incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.).
Chevalier, who the report describes as a Democratic socialist, said her approach to leadership votes would not be automatic. Instead, she told reporters she would look to the preferences of voters in her New York district before supporting Jeffries for the top House job, according to The Hill.
In her statements, Chevalier emphasized her ties to New York’s 13th congressional district and indicated that she expects her decision-making to reflect the views of residents she represents. The report frames her comments as a response to questions about how newly elected members could weigh in on party leadership if Democrats return to power in the chamber.
Jeffries, a Democrat from New York, currently leads House Democrats in the minority as minority leader. The House Speaker is selected by the party that controls the majority, and leadership decisions are typically shaped by conference negotiations, vote counts, and agreements among members.
Chevalier’s comments also report that internal dynamics within the Democratic conference could be more consequential if the party has to assemble a majority again. Newly elected lawmakers who campaign on different priorities can complicate leadership consensus, particularly when they link leadership support to direct consultation with constituents.
The Hill’s report situates Chevalier’s position within the context of her district’s recent primary contest against Espaillat. By defeating an incumbent in the district’s Democratic primary last week, Chevalier emerged from a competitive intraparty race that underscored shifting alignments among Democratic voters in parts of New York.
If Democrats regain control of the House in the next Congress, Chevalier’s stated willingness to consult her community before backing Jeffries suggests she may seek a mandate before joining any leadership coalition. Her remarks also highlight that Speaker votes, while determined by party control, can still involve negotiations among members with differing views on how party leadership should be selected and supported.
