The project will replace New Albany’s current Budd Road station with a facility planned to be staffed 24/7, officials said, to better cover the south end of the city and surrounding areas.
Crews have begun construction on a new Floyd County fire station in New Albany, Indiana, as county and fire officials seek to shorten response times in the south end of the city. The project follows concerns that the closest full-time fire coverage to parts of southern New Albany has been roughly 20 minutes away from current operations, a gap officials said can affect how quickly help arrives during fires, medical emergencies, and other calls for service.
The station, identified in local reporting as Station 4, is planned to be fully staffed 24 hours a day rather than relying on volunteer coverage. Under the plan described by WAVE, the change is intended to provide consistent, immediate staffing for the areas of New Albany that have the longest travel time to reach a full-time response unit.
Construction activity is set to continue on land tied to the current Budd Road location. WAVE reported that the existing fire station on Budd Road is expected to be torn down to make way for the new Station 4 facility. Officials described the redevelopment as both a public-safety upgrade and an effort to modernize the station used for daily firefighting operations.
Local reporting also indicates that the new station’s coverage area is intended to address service demands in southern New Albany, where residents and crews have faced longer travel distances to reach fully staffed engines. The need for quicker access to trained firefighters is particularly relevant in a region that spans urban blocks, industrial corridors, and neighborhoods where response time can be critical.
Floyd County’s decision to move from volunteer housing toward a fully staffed model reflects a broader focus on emergency readiness, including maintaining predictable coverage during overnight hours and peak call periods. Officials said 24/7 staffing is intended to reduce the variability that can come with part-time arrangements and to help ensure that responders are already positioned close to the communities they serve.
The ground-breaking marks an early phase in a multi-step process that includes demolition of the current structure and construction of the new facility. WAVE’s report did not provide a start date for operations at the new station or a precise completion timeline, but it framed the project as a direct response to the existing coverage gap tied to the distance from full-time service.
For Kentucky-area residents, the development is part of the daily public-safety and infrastructure planning across the Ohio River region. New Albany’s southern neighborhoods sit just across the river from parts of Kentucky, and improvements to emergency response capacity in the metropolitan area can affect how quickly first responders are able to reach communities along shared transportation routes and neighboring jurisdictions.
