U.S. District Judge Ramon Reyes in Brooklyn ruled that the Trump administration lacked a valid basis to challenge New York City laws that limit police cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
A federal judge on Friday dismissed a lawsuit brought by the Trump administration seeking to block New York City laws that limit local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, according to a report from The Hill. The case was heard in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn before Judge Ramon Reyes.
In the dismissal, Reyes concluded that the federal government did not have a sufficient legal basis to sue to stop the city’s rules, The Hill reported. The court decision leaves New York City’s challenged provisions in place unless the administration pursues further appellate review.
The lawsuit targeted New York City “sanctuary” laws that, among other things, restrict what city law enforcement can do in connection with immigration enforcement. The reported focus of the challenged provisions was an approach that limits police authority to detain immigrants for federal immigration purposes.
According to The Hill, Reyes said the Trump administration cannot challenge a city law that restricts police from detaining immigrants. The ruling addressed the administration’s ability to bring the case rather than ordering substantive changes to the city’s policies based on a merits ruling.
The procedural outcome means the dispute will not be resolved in the same way as cases that proceed to a full merits determination on the legality of the city measures. Instead, the decision centers on whether the federal government met the threshold requirements to bring the lawsuit in federal court.
The dismissal also underscores the role of jurisdictional and standing-type barriers in lawsuits between federal and local governments. Even where immigration enforcement practices are contested, federal courts may limit or end cases if they conclude the plaintiff lacks a proper basis to seek judicial relief.
