Google is taking its AI-driven contrail-avoidance research into a larger, state-backed trial in the North Atlantic, aiming to reduce a climate warming effect created by aircraft “contrails” at airspace scale. The effort, called Operation Blue Skies, is designed to help airlines and air traffic controllers make targeted route and timing adjustments that steer flights away from regions where contrails would be most strongly warming.

Contrails are thin, white lines that form behind planes in clear or near-clear conditions. According to Google’s announcement, they form when water vapor in jet exhaust condenses around soot particles, producing clouds that can trap heat. Google says these warming contrails account for roughly one third of aviation’s total climate impact, making them a high-leverage target for mitigation.

After publishing earlier research on how AI could help mitigate contrail warming, Google says it worked with multiple parts of the aviation ecosystem, including airlines, air navigation service providers, and flight planning technology providers. Google describes the program as “the world’s first state-backed trial” to avoid contrails across an oceanic airspace region, rather than focusing only on one carrier’s routes.

The trial will run in the eastern half of the North Atlantic corridor within Shanwick airspace, which Google says accounts for approximately 5% of global contrail warming. Google said the program lasts 30 months and consists of two operational trials, each lasting about four months. During trial hours each year, around 10,000 flights passing through Shanwick airspace from hundreds of cities will be involved, with only a small percentage of flights that would otherwise pass through contrail-sensitive airspace subject to deviations.

In practical terms, Google says the system will slightly deviate a small share of eligible flights to prevent contrails from forming strongly warming patterns. The company emphasizes that the objective is not to rewrite flight planning broadly, but to use forecast-informed adjustments that keep aircraft operations within typical flight practices while reducing climate forcing where feasible.

The program’s governance and funding structure also reflect the government’s role. Google says Operation Blue Skies is co-funded by industry partners and the UK Department for Transport (DfT) through the ATI Programme, a partnership between the Aerospace Technology Institute, the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, and Innovate UK. Google adds that 100% of the government grant funding is allocated directly to academic, non-profit, and aviation partners to ensure the public funds support sovereign scientific capability.

Google UK is participating on a pro-bono basis, contributing 1.4 million pounds in-kind through AI research expertise, engineering time, and high-performance computing infrastructure, the company said. In its framing, Google and its collaborators aim to convert climate science into operational tools that can be validated through real flight operations and air traffic management, not just simulation.

Even with the structured rollout, there are limits to what Google does and does not disclose in the announcement.
