Google’s Gemini adds free, full-length SAT practice tests

Alphabet’s Google is rolling out on-demand SAT practice tests inside the Gemini app, offering immediate feedback and explanations drawn from vetted materials.

Google said it is helping students keep up with SAT preparation by adding full-length practice exams to its Gemini app at no cost. In a blog post published Tuesday, Google pointed to surging search activity around SAT prep, citing Google Trends data that shows “SAT prep,” “SAT prep websites,” and “SAT preparation classes near me” have become breakout queries over the past three months.

The company says the practice tests are available on demand in Gemini, with users prompted to start by asking Gemini to take a practice SAT test. Google’s emphasis is on convenience, framing the feature as a way to keep studying moving even for students juggling classes, work, or other commitments.

Google also said the practice tests are based on content from The Princeton Review, which it described as “rigorously vetted.” The company did not specify which portions of the exam are drawn from Princeton Review’s materials or how that content is mapped into Gemini’s practice format, but it tied the SAT experience directly to those vetted inputs.

After a user completes a practice test in Gemini, Google said the app provides immediate feedback. That feedback includes highlights of where the student did well and where they may need additional study, positioning the tool as both a test simulator and a learning checkpoint.

For questions a student does not understand, Google said Gemini can explain the correct answer. The company did not describe whether explanations are generated dynamically for each question type or drawn from a pre-written library, but it presented the feature as interactive tutoring built around the completed practice exam.

The SAT is a standardized college admissions test in the United States, and practice exams are commonly used by test-takers to familiarize themselves with question formats, pacing, and subject matter. By embedding practice tests and feedback in a widely used AI assistant, Google is tying test prep to the same conversational interface it has been building across products.

For Alphabet, the move fits a broader pattern of applying Gemini to everyday workflows rather than limiting it to general Q&A. Turning an app into a guided study tool can also increase engagement and repeated use, since test preparation typically involves multiple sessions rather than a single one-off activity.

Still, there are limits to what Google disclosed in the announcement. The company did not provide details on scoring methodology, how closely the practice tests mirror the most current SAT blueprint, whether test-takers can review an item-by-item answer key beyond explanations, or whether results are stored or shared in any way. Google also did not state how long a full-length practice test takes to complete or what accommodations (if any) are supported.

Looking ahead, students and educators are likely to watch how Google positions these SAT practice tests over time, including whether additional standardized test formats or subject-focused practice options are added to Gemini. The rollout also raises a practical question for users: how they will integrate the on-demand exams into a study plan, particularly if they already rely on commercial prep products or dedicated SAT courses.

Why It Matters

  • By placing test-prep exercises inside Gemini, Google is making standardized exam practice more accessible and potentially more frequent for users who rely on mobile tools.
  • The immediate feedback and explanation features are designed to shift SAT prep from passive studying to iterative learning.
  • Partnership-backed content from The Princeton Review may help Google differentiate its practice tests versus generic AI tutoring.
  • If expanded, this approach could deepen AI assistants’ role in education, moving beyond explanations into structured practice and performance tracking.
