Laurel County Clerk confirms London Mayor Randall Weddle’s name will not be on the ballot

A judge’s ruling that London Mayor Randall Weddle is not eligible to run for reelection has triggered a ballot change, according to Laurel County election officials. On June 24, the Laurel County Clerk confirmed that Weddle’s name will not appear on the ballot for the London mayoral race.

WKYT reported that the clerk’s confirmation came after the court decision addressing the mayor’s candidacy. The development means voters will not be presented with Weddle’s name as a candidate for reelection in the London contest.

In the aftermath of the ruling, the clerk’s office moved to ensure the ballot reflects the outcome of the eligibility determination. The confirmation also indicates that the clerk’s office is treating the court’s decision as controlling for ballot placement.

London residents who planned to vote in the mayoral race will now need to consider other candidates listed on the ballot. The ballot composition, as described by WKYT, will be affected specifically by the removal of Weddle’s name rather than a dispute over the rest of the slate.

The case highlights how eligibility challenges can directly affect election materials and voter options, even close to the time ballots are finalized. For the city, the change also raises practical questions about how the mayoral field is presented to the public for the next term.

The clerk’s confirmation is the most recent step in the process flowing from the judge’s ruling. The next concrete development will be how election officials publish and distribute the final ballot for the London mayoral contest, given that Weddle’s name will not appear as a candidate.
