Lexington asks residents to hold blue recycling carts Tuesday as heavy rain strains capacity at recycling center

Heavy rain has created problems at the Lexington Recycling Center, and the City of Lexington is asking residents to avoid placing their blue recycling carts out on Tuesday, according to WKYT.

In a notice tied to Tuesday’s collection window, the city said there is currently no room at the Lexington Recycling Center, which is affecting the ability to accept additional recyclables that would normally be handled on schedule.

The request applies specifically to “blue recycling carts,” WKYT reported, as city officials manage space and routing at the facility after weather-related disruptions.

City staff did not indicate an expansion of capacity in the announcement highlighted by WKYT, focusing instead on preventing additional materials from entering the system when the center cannot take them, a move that can reduce the risk of overflowing storage areas and related cleanup needs.

For residents, the immediate effect is that Tuesday’s recycling pickup for blue carts will not operate under normal conditions, based on the city’s request not to place carts out during the affected period.

The city did not provide new pickup dates in the WKYT report, and residents were directed toward the city’s guidance as conditions at the Lexington Recycling Center change after the rain-related impacts ease.
