The Nuclear Company says its proposal along the Ohio River would be the first nuclear power plant in Kentucky and, if fully built, the largest nuclear site in the country.
A Lexington-based nuclear energy startup, The Nuclear Company, has proposed building a large nuclear power plant campus along the Ohio River in Lewis County, a plan it says would be the first nuclear power plant in Kentucky and, if fully realized, the largest nuclear power plant site in the United States. The proposal was announced Wednesday in a press release, according to Kentucky Lantern.
Kentucky Lantern reported that the company’s plan envisions a campus rather than a single facility, with multiple components on a single site in Lewis County. The announcement positions the project as a new nuclear option for the state’s electricity supply, expanding what the company characterizes as nuclear power’s footprint in Kentucky.
The announcement was accompanied by public officials. Kentucky Lantern’s accompanying photo shows Gov. Andy Beshear at a podium at the announcement event, indicating the state’s involvement at least at the level of public awareness and discussion of the proposal.
While the company framed the plan around the scale of the facility and its significance for Kentucky and the nation, the reported coverage did not describe a finalized permitting path, construction start date, or firm schedule. In general terms, large nuclear projects in the United States require federal review and extensive state and local coordination, including environmental and safety considerations, before construction could proceed.
If the company proceeds from proposal to implementation, the next steps would likely involve formal applications and public processes that can extend for months or years. Those steps typically include environmental assessment, engineering and site readiness evaluations, and regulatory review focused on radiation safety, emergency planning, and long-term waste management.
For Lewis County and nearby communities along the Ohio River, any nuclear site proposal would also raise practical questions about infrastructure, emergency response planning, workforce needs, and transportation impacts during construction and operation. The company’s stated goal of building the largest nuclear site in the country, if accurate, would also make those considerations a central part of any public discussion.
The Nuclear Company’s Wednesday announcement adds to Kentucky’s ongoing debate over energy generation and grid reliability, with nuclear power often described by proponents as a steady source of electricity and by opponents as a high-cost, long-lead-time undertaking. In this case, the reported coverage focuses primarily on the proposal itself and its headline claims about scale and first-in-state status.
As the plan moves into whatever formal review process follows, Kentucky officials and community stakeholders would be expected to seek clarity on timelines, oversight, and how public safety requirements would be met, including how emergency planning would be coordinated with local responders. The company’s next disclosures, including any project specifics and regulatory milestones, would determine what comes next for Lewis County and the state.
