Lexington’s Director of the Division of Emergency Management, Rob Larkin, said he plans to retire effective Jan. 1, 2027, according to a report by WKYT published Oct. 19, 2026.
WKYT reported that Larkin’s retirement date is set for the first day of 2027, meaning the city will need to manage the leadership transition during the final months of 2026 and ensure continuity of the division’s work leading into the new year.
Emergency management leadership is often tied to year-round preparation and response coordination for incidents that can arise with little warning, and the timing of a January retirement can affect how a government agency schedules planning, staff coverage, and internal reviews ahead of peak seasonal periods.
Larkin’s announcement also puts Lexington on notice to identify who will assume the director role after Jan. 1, 2027, including whether the city will name an interim director and what appointment process will apply under existing city rules and administrative structures.
