The request follows reports that stairs between Wildwood Park and the school create a daily barrier for parents and students, including those who use mobility devices.
A Lexington mother is urging local officials to add an accessibility ramp near Wildwood Park after describing stairs that she says pose a daily obstacle for families walking to Lansdowne Elementary School to pick up students, WKYT reported on Oct. 16, 2026.
According to the report, the route runs from Wildwood Park toward Lansdowne Elementary and includes stairs that require people to climb or descend on a day-to-day basis. The problem, the mother argued, is that the design makes the walk difficult for parents and students with mobility needs, including those using strollers or wheelchairs.
WKYT’s account described the stairway as part of an ordinary pickup routine for families in the area. For parents without mobility devices, the stairs can still add time and friction to a daily schedule, the report said, while for those who need accessible paths, the stairs can be an effective barrier.
The mother’s request centers on making the walkway usable without requiring stair navigation. Her push for a ramp would, if approved and built, change the physical access point families use when traveling between Wildwood Park and the school area.
The report did not indicate that a final decision has been made or provide a construction timeline. It also did not specify whether Lexington officials are considering the request through a particular capital improvement plan or accessibility compliance process.
In the meantime, families continue to face the existing stair route during student pickup and drop-off times, and the mother’s advocacy is focused on prompting a review and, if warranted, a redesign of the access path to reduce ongoing barriers.
Next steps would depend on whether the city and relevant school or parks officials choose to evaluate the site, determine engineering and cost requirements for a ramp, and schedule any additions or modifications to the walkway connecting Wildwood Park and Lansdowne Elementary.
