Monaco prosecutor names Ukrainian woman as main suspect in parcel bomb attack

Prosecutors say Interpol has identified the suspect and that she is no longer in Monaco after a June blast injured three residents, including a sanctioned Ukrainian businessman, his partner and a child.

Monaco’s prosecutor’s office says a Ukrainian woman has been identified as the main suspect in a parcel bombing carried out in the principality, and that the woman is no longer in Monaco. The announcement comes as investigators work across borders, following an explosion in a residential building that seriously injured three people and prompted police to seek an international suspect.

According to Monaco prosecutors, Interpol has issued a Red Notice naming Anastasiia Berezovska, 39, as the person suspected of attempted murder and related offenses after an explosive device was reportedly placed with criminal intent and criminal conspiracy. Prosecutors said the investigation identified her quickly, and they credited cooperation between Monaco and French police for helping identify “in a particularly short time” the person suspected of carrying out the attack.

The attack took place after an individual left a package in the entrance of a small apartment building, with an explosion occurring shortly afterward. CCTV footage, prosecutors said, showed the person suspected of leaving the package wearing a dark bucket hat, initially leading investigators to believe the individual might have been a man. The blast happened shortly after three residents entered the building, a couple and a 13-year-old.

Injuries were severe for the adults. Prosecutors said the adults were taken to Nice University Hospital (CHU), while the child was admitted to the Lenval children’s hospital in Nice in a non-critical condition. By Wednesday, Monaco prosecutors said the man was no longer in a life-or-death situation, while the woman’s condition had not yet stabilised at the time of the report.

Monaco authorities have not confirmed the identities of the victims, but local reporting described the attack as targeting Vadym Yermolaiev, his partner and his son. Yermolaiev, 58, is described in the reporting as a wealthy real estate developer who has lived in Monaco and is a Cypriot citizen after renouncing his Ukrainian citizenship in 2019. He was also described as having business interests in the wine and alcohol sector in Russia-annexed Crimea and as being under sanctions imposed by the Ukrainian government since 2023.

The prosecutor’s naming of a specific suspect and the issuance of an Interpol Red Notice shift the case into an international phase.
