Morehead Italian restaurants partner on free summer meals for kids, owner says theft is threatening the effort

Several Italian restaurants in Morehead are teaming up this summer to provide free meals to children who might otherwise go without during the school break, according to LEX18. The effort involves three restaurants working together to ensure kids have access to food during the summer months.

The restaurants’ coalition centers on distributing free summer meals in the community. The program’s participants say the goal is to support families and reduce the odds that children face hunger when school is out. LEX18 reported that the restaurants are coordinating their efforts so the meals can be available during the summer season.

One of the restaurant owners told LEX18 that theft has become a major problem for the program. The owner said stolen items or supplies are interfering with the restaurants’ ability to keep the meals coming consistently, creating operational and financial strain for the participating businesses.

According to the report, the owner’s concern is that the continued theft could force the restaurants to scale back or reconsider their participation. While the restaurants are working to serve the community, they are also being placed in a position where they must spend more time and resources replacing what has been taken.

The LEX18 story described the owner’s message as a warning to the community that the free-meal effort depends on both goodwill and basic security. If theft continues, the owner said, the program could be at risk even though the restaurants’ stated purpose is to help children.

No further details were provided in the account about the timing, suspects, or whether law enforcement has been engaged. The report likewise did not specify whether specific delivery containers, meal supplies, or meal locations were targeted. Any next steps appear to hinge on whether the theft can be stopped and whether the restaurants can sustain meal distribution under current losses.
