The group unveiled its new children’s park at Chickasaw Park on Thursday, describing the project as the nation’s first nature-based Black history children’s park.
Play Cousins Collective unveiled Sankofa Sanctuary at Chickasaw Park in Louisville on Thursday, marking the opening of a new nature-based children’s park focused on Black history, according to WAVE. The group said the site is designed to connect children and families with history through outdoor play and learning at a neighborhood park setting.
The project, called Sankofa Sanctuary, is being positioned by Play Cousins Collective as the nation’s first nature-based Black history children’s park. The unveiling took place at Chickasaw Park, a public venue in Louisville where community events and programming occur throughout the year.
WAVE reported that the unveiling ceremony followed the completion of the Sankofa Sanctuary installation within Chickasaw Park. Play Cousins Collective framed the park as a way to provide children with an experience that combines nature and storytelling, while also recognizing Black history in a public, family-oriented space.
The announcement places the new park within Louisville’s broader network of parks and community recreation sites. By situating the attraction at Chickasaw Park, the organization said it is making the program accessible to families in the city without requiring travel to a specialized museum or education venue.
While the organization has publicized the park’s purpose around Black history for children, details on design elements, programming schedules, and ongoing maintenance plans were not included in the information provided with the discovery report. Residents seeking to use or participate in related activities may want to confirm hours and any event rules through the city or park operators as the project begins its public-facing phase.
The unveiling also raises practical questions that typically follow major changes at public park sites, including how the space will be supervised during open play hours and how public safety and facility upkeep will be handled. Park users will likely see updated signage or guidance once a new attraction is fully integrated into park operations.
Play Cousins Collective’s next steps, as described in the unveiling coverage, are expected to center on community awareness and family participation as Sankofa Sanctuary becomes part of Chickasaw Park’s public offerings.
