The Florida Republican, citing the outcome of a federal inquiry, said he plans to seek Ilhan Omar’s removal from the House of Representatives.
Rep. Randy Fine (R-Fla.) said Friday that he plans to introduce a House resolution to expel Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) if a federal investigation determines she violated the law. Fine made the announcement in remarks reported by The Hill, framing his proposal around the conclusion of an inquiry rather than a specific House vote on a pending bill or complaint.
Fine, a member of the House, tied his stated next step to a “federal investigation,” according to the report, and said he would move forward with the expulsion effort if the investigation finds that Omar broke the law. Expulsion from the House requires action by the full House, and Fine’s comments place his effort in the category of politically consequential resolutions that generally hinge on formal findings rather than allegations alone.
The Hill reported that Fine is a frequent source of controversy in the chamber, including past remarks about Omar that House Democrats condemned as racist. The report said Fine described Omar as a “terrorist” in 2025, a characterization Democrats criticized following public backlash.
Omar’s office has faced repeated scrutiny from Republican lawmakers over a range of issues since her election, but Fine’s new comments focus specifically on the mechanism of congressional discipline through expulsion. Under House rules, expulsion is reserved for serious misconduct, and any resolution would require significant support beyond a single member’s sponsorship.
Fine’s announcement arrives amid an environment in which Republicans in Congress have repeatedly emphasized investigations and enforcement, while Democrats have argued that expulsion attempts can be used as a political tool. In this case, Fine is attempting to anchor an expulsion push to an external process, linking the timing of his proposal to an investigative outcome.
If Fine introduces the resolution, the House would have to consider it through the chamber’s processes, including committee review and a floor vote. Any move to expel would require not only a majority, but also adherence to the House’s voting thresholds for removal, making the sponsorship announcement only the first step in a much longer procedure.
The expulsion proposal also raises questions about how the House would weigh investigative findings against constitutional and legislative standards for discipline. Even if a federal investigation produces conclusions, lawmakers would still need to decide how those conclusions translate into the House’s own decision-making on expulsion, a high bar that typically attracts legal and political scrutiny.
