The Louisiana Republican said he had reviewed portions of the agreement ahead of a planned signing in days and urged scrutiny of the bargain’s national security and implementation.
Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) sharply criticized the Trump administration’s emerging Iran deal on Wednesday, saying he viewed the agreement’s details as “awful” and characterizing it as a “tremendous foreign policy blunder,” two days before the Trump administration and Iran are set to sign the pact, according to remarks he made on Capitol Hill.
Cassidy made the comments to Nexstar’s Reshad Hudson, telling viewers that “the details that I’ve seen so far look … awful.” He added that the deal “will go down as a tremendous foreign policy blunder,” as the signing approached.
The Hill reported that the agreement between the Trump administration and Iran is scheduled for signature shortly, and that Cassidy’s criticisms were based on information he said he had reviewed prior to the signing.
Cassidy’s comments come as Congress continues to weigh its role in overseeing major foreign policy initiatives, including any negotiations that may affect regional security and U.S. diplomatic enforcement.
Under the Constitution, foreign affairs policy is primarily carried out by the executive branch, while the Senate and Congress retain influence through consultation requirements on certain matters and by funding and oversight authorities. Cassidy’s criticism was directed at the substance of the agreement ahead of its formal execution.
The report did not detail what specific provisions Cassidy objected to, nor did it identify the formal document or text sections that he said he reviewed. His remarks instead focused on the overall characterization of the agreement’s contents and expected historical impact.
As the signing date nears, lawmakers and agencies typically prepare to implement any terms that require U.S. government actions, including possible changes to sanctions, enforcement priorities, monitoring mechanisms, and reporting obligations, depending on what the final agreement includes.
Cassidy’s statement adds to a line of congressional scrutiny that often intensifies when negotiated international agreements move from draft language to a signed final form, leaving the public and lawmakers with limited visibility until the text and implementing steps are published or briefed.
