The administration official said the United States does not yet have a finalized agreement with Iran, but estimated that negotiations are roughly three-quarters complete and that a signing could occur within the next few days.
A senior Trump administration official told NewsNation on Friday that the United States has not yet finalized a deal with Iran, but estimated that the negotiations are about 75 percent complete and that a signing could occur within the next few days.
According to the report, the official framed the status as “there is no deal yet,” while describing the process as close enough that the remaining steps are expected to be handled on a compressed timeline. The official’s assessment was presented to NewsNation directly and treated as an internal timeline update rather than a formal confirmation that an agreement has been completed.
The development comes amid continued uncertainty over the legal and implementation details of any agreement with Iran, including what the United States would commit to and what Iran would be required to do under the terms of a final document. The reported 75 percent figure was described as an estimate of progress rather than a formal measure recognized in any public agreement.
While the administration official indicated that a signature could be forthcoming, the report emphasized that no deal was yet concluded at the time of the Friday interview. That means there is currently no public, signed instrument available to clarify whether any sanctions relief, verification steps, enforcement mechanisms, or other operational commitments are already determined.
The practical effect of a near-term signing would depend on what the final text authorizes and how quickly implementing steps can be completed through the executive branch. In past arms-control and nonproliferation frameworks involving the United States, implementation can require coordination across agencies and, depending on the sanctions involved, specific administrative actions and monitoring procedures.
For Congress and the broader policy process, a signed agreement would shift the question from negotiation status to implementation, oversight, and any statutory constraints that may apply. The administration’s estimate does not, by itself, determine the legal status of any agreement, and any final binding commitments would follow only after a completed and publicly accessible document is produced.
The next relevant milestone, according to the report, is the timing of a possible signature within days, which would then allow officials to move from negotiations to the formal steps required for implementation and any associated public guidance.
