Spotify rolls out “Playlist Notes,” letting editors and listeners add context directly inside playlists

The streaming platform is expanding a concept it says grew out of “User Notes,” combining editorial commentary with new ways for listeners to explain why songs and shows belong in the playlists they create.

Spotify is adding another layer of storytelling to music listening with a new in-app feature called Playlist Notes, designed to let editors and users attach context to tracks inside playlists.

In a post on its newsroom site, Spotify says Playlist Notes will appear inside playlists so listeners can read why a pick was made, including what makes a track culturally relevant or why it fits the mood and theme of that list. Spotify also says the feature can help listeners get to know the people behind playlists through Editor Profiles, which present an editor’s top tracks and albums along with the playlists they contribute to.

Spotify’s editors will be the first source of commentary for Playlist Notes, with the company framing the launch as an extension of an earlier idea called User Notes. Alongside editorial notes, Spotify says listeners will be able to add their own notes to playlists they create or collaborate on, effectively turning playlist curation into a more personal, annotated activity.

The company says Playlist Notes from editors and Editor Profiles are rolling out to Free and Premium users ages 16 and older in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. To start, the notes will be available in a set of large Spotify playlists including Today’s Top Hits, RapCaviar, Hot Country, All New Pop, mint, and Fresh Finds Hip-Hop.

Spotify also specifies where users will encounter the feature. On participating playlists, people can tap Notes at the top to explore the commentary. To jump to an Editor Profile, Spotify says users can tap an editor’s name alongside a note or at the top of the playlist. Spotify further says the notes will be shown in Now Playing, even when someone is listening to a song outside the playlist where the note originated.

Beyond editorial notes, Spotify says user-generated notes are expanding on mobile as well. It says that on iOS and Android, users can add their own notes to the tracks, podcast episodes, and audiobooks they have added to their playlists. The company describes the purpose in everyday terms, such as capturing a memory, sharing a recommendation, or explaining why a pick made the cut.

Spotify’s move reflects a broader strategy in streaming, where platforms compete not only on catalog size and algorithmic recommendations, but also on the experience around discovery and curation. By embedding editorial and user context directly in playlists, Spotify is creating a more social and interpretive layer on top of passive listening, potentially increasing engagement with playlists themselves rather than treating them as static lists of songs.

For Spotify, Playlist Notes also adds a clearer path to content differentiation among popular playlists. Playlists like Today’s Top Hits and genre-specific brands such as RapCaviar and Hot Country already carry identity and audience expectations. Spotify’s addition of commentary and profiles may reinforce those identities while giving listeners reasons to return to a playlist to read what editors and curators are thinking.

The company’s announcement does not provide details on how long notes are, whether there is moderation for user-created notes, or how Spotify will handle disputes or copyright-related issues for user text. It also does not say whether notes will be searchable, translated, or surfaced through recommendations beyond the described presence in participating playlists and Now Playing.

Going forward, listeners and analysts will likely watch whether Playlist Notes encourages more sharing and creation of collaborative playlists, how quickly the editor-led rollout expands beyond the initial playlist set and regions, and whether the feature meaningfully changes time spent on Spotify’s playlist discovery surfaces as it broadens to additional markets and user-curated lists.

Why It Matters

  • Playlist Notes turns playlists into richer, annotated experiences, which could strengthen user engagement with Spotify’s curated playlist ecosystem.
  • By pairing editorial commentary with Editor Profiles, Spotify may deepen loyalty to playlist brands and the editors behind them.
  • The feature highlights Spotify’s push to blend music discovery with podcast and audiobook consumption within the same playlist workflow.
  • Wider adoption of user-created notes could create more reasons for users to collaborate and revisit playlists, potentially increasing social activity on the platform.
