Trump says Senate hearing on DNI nominee Jay Clayton cancelled until Jamie McDonald confirmed as U.S. attorney | The Apex Times

President Donald Trump said the Senate hearing scheduled for his nominee to lead the Director of National Intelligence, Jay Clayton, has been cancelled and would not proceed until Jamie McDonald is confirmed to serve as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, the Trump campaign said in a report carried by Fox News on June 17, 2026.

According to the report, Trump tied the postponement to the status of the Justice Department role for McDonald, indicating that he would not advance the DNI nomination process while that replacement confirmation remains pending in the Senate.

The DNI role is a Senate-confirmed position, and a hearing is typically part of the vetting process that precedes committee action and, if the nominee advances, a full Senate consideration, but the report did not specify which committee would have held the hearing or when it had been scheduled.

Jay Clayton, whom Trump nominated for DNI, would oversee major intelligence community functions, including the coordination of intelligence activities across agencies. The report did not detail any additional scheduling steps beyond the statement that the hearing is cancelled until McDonald’s confirmation as U.S. attorney is completed.

Jamie McDonald’s prospective confirmation as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York would place him at the head of a high-profile federal prosecutorial office responsible for enforcing federal law in one of the country’s largest jurisdictions. The report frames the confirmation as a gating item for the DNI hearing timeline rather than as a separate matter in the personnel process.

The immediate practical effect of Trump’s statement is to pause a formal public step in the DNI confirmation pipeline for Clayton, shifting the focus to the Senate’s handling of McDonald’s nomination first. If McDonald is confirmed later, the report indicates the DNI hearing would be able to resume under the revised timeline.

Why It Matters

Delaying a DNI hearing changes the timing of the Senate’s public vetting step for a Senate-confirmed national security leadership role.
The statement indicates that the Senate’s progress on one confirmation, McDonald’s U.S. attorney nomination, is being treated as a prerequisite for another, Clayton’s intelligence leadership nomination.
A pause in the confirmation process can extend the period during which leadership succession and coordination matters remain under existing arrangements, depending on current acting officials.
Because U.S. attorneys oversee federal enforcement priorities, McDonald’s confirmation status may remain a focal point for both federal prosecution policy and the broader personnel pipeline.
