President Donald Trump said in an Axios interview that he was surprised by the scale of mourning for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as Tehran hosted a weeklong funeral ceremony drawing large crowds and state media images of family members crying.
President Donald Trump said in an Axios interview, as reported by Zero Hedge, that he was “shocked” by what he described as unusually visible grief among mourners at Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral in Tehran. Trump also characterized the attendance as so large that, he said, the gathering could be “taken out in one fell swoop,” adding in the interview that “one shot” could take them all out, while he said the United States did not do so.
The remark was made against the backdrop of a funeral ceremony Tehran has presented as both a religious observance and a public display of continuity, according to Time. Time reported that the funeral proceedings, which began after Khamenei’s death, were structured as a six-day program and that tens of thousands of mourners packed Tehran on Sunday.
Time said the high-visibility nature of the ceremonies is intended to project strength and support a smooth succession of Iranian leadership institutions after Khamenei’s death. It described expert and Iranian official commentary framing the event as a message that the Islamic Republic’s institutions remain intact despite the losses and upheaval Iran has faced since the start of the broader regional conflict.
In the days leading into the funeral, Time also reported that Iranian state media showed multiple members of Khamenei’s family crying, including footage of three of his sons. The report said that the ceremonies have been attended by many senior figures in Iran’s remaining leadership as Tehran seeks to unify support amid wartime pressures and economic strain.
Trump’s Axios remarks, as carried by Zero Hedge, underscore how U.S. political rhetoric during the Iran conflict continues to center on targeting and deterrence language, even when the topic is a domestic Iranian political and religious event. The interview comments also drew attention to Trump’s stated belief, according to the report, that he expected Iranians to react differently to Khamenei’s death.
No official U.S. or Iranian statement in the supplied material clarifies whether Trump’s “one shot” language should be understood as a general deterrence comment or as a specific operational claim. The supplied records also do not provide a transcript of the Axios interview, leaving the exact wording and context dependent on third-party reporting.
With the funeral week continuing in Tehran, the next developments are likely to focus on how Iran presents the succession message and whether U.S.-Iran exchanges further intensify around the funeral’s symbolism, given that the event is being used, according to Time, to demonstrate national unity and institutional endurance.
