THE APEX TIMES
President Donald Trump issued a warning, according to a report published Friday, that California election officials could face prison time if they count mail-in ballots from about 20,000 people identified by federal authorities as possible noncitizens.
President Donald Trump warned California election officials that they could face criminal penalties, including prison time, if they count mail-in ballots associated with people the federal government has identified as possible noncitizens, according to a report published Friday by Zero Hedge. The warning is framed as escalation of a dispute over election administration rules in California near the midterm election period.
The report says Trump warned officials “they will all go to jail,” linking the alleged threat of prosecution to the state’s handling of mail-in ballots from about 20,000 people identified by federal authorities as possible noncitizens. The report places the warning in the context of ongoing legal conflict between the Trump administration and state election practices.
Under the federal-state election framework, election administration responsibilities are primarily exercised by states, including ballot handling rules and eligibility verification processes. Federal involvement can include enforcement of immigration-related law and civil or criminal investigation where eligibility questions arise, but any effort to compel state election processes typically runs into legal questions about federal authority, due process for individuals, and the scope of state discretion in managing elections.
The reported warning comes at a time when California is processing ballots and election officials are making determinations about ballot acceptance and counting. The practical stakes described by the report are that any delay, rejection, or counting decision affecting the group at issue could become part of broader litigation and compliance efforts between election administrators and the federal government.
The report does not provide, within the information provided to this desk, the specific legal vehicle behind the warning, such as an injunction, administrative directive, or a court ruling governing how California must treat the mail ballots linked to the identified group. It also does not specify whether the threat was delivered in writing, in a call, or in testimony, or which agency or officials were involved.
Because the central claims in the story are attributed to the Zero Hedge report and the record provided here does not include primary documentation, readers should treat details such as the exact number of people and the specific statement about prison time as unverified outside of that reporting. A complete account would require confirmation from contemporaneous statements by the White House, the U.S. Department of Justice, or federal election-related agencies, as well as any corresponding court filings or orders in the underlying dispute.
