Senior Trump administration officials told reporters the United States will not reduce troop levels or alter its current posture for the next 60 days while talks with Iran proceed, citing the need to reassess after negotiations begin.
The Trump administration said the U.S. military will keep its current force posture in the Middle East during a 60-day negotiation window with Iran. Senior administration officials told reporters during a phone briefing on Monday that the United States is maintaining current deployments while talks are underway and that any drawdown will not begin immediately.
According to the officials, the administration is approaching the negotiation period as a first phase, with the possibility of reassessing later. One senior official said, “We hope to draw them down, but we're not doing that yet,” during the briefing.
The administration’s position indicates that operational decisions about force levels are tied to the timetable of negotiations rather than to an immediate policy pivot at the start of talks. The officials also described the decision as part of maintaining leverage and readiness as discussions proceed.
Officials did not provide details in the briefing record on specific bases, platform types, troop numbers, or a schedule for any future adjustments. They also did not lay out conditions that would trigger a drawdown during or after the 60-day period, beyond the general idea of waiting to see results as negotiations progress.
The decision to maintain posture during negotiations can have practical effects for air and ground readiness, intelligence collection, and security support roles across the region. Keeping force levels stable during talks can also reduce near-term uncertainty for U.S. partners and for U.S. service members deployed under current mission assignments.
For U.S. policy, the approach centers the negotiating timeline as the main reference point for any subsequent changes in military posture. Any later drawdown would likely require additional internal reviews and would typically involve coordination with combatant commands and partner governments, depending on the missions involved.
If the negotiations conclude before the end of the 60-day window or if talks break down, the administration would still need to determine whether maintaining the current posture was necessary for deterrence and public safety and whether adjustments should be made. The officials’ remarks did not address those scenarios, focusing instead on sustaining the current posture for the duration of the negotiation period unless changed later.
