‘Violent Night 2’ Producer Says Mrs. Claus Nearly Appeared at the End of the First Film, Changing How Kristen Bell’s Character Would Have Played

“Violent Night 2” arrives with a new Mrs. Claus on screen, as Kristen Bell debuts as the character in the sequel premiering Dec. 4, but the producer of the franchise says the idea nearly appeared much earlier. In an interview this week, producer Kelly McCormick recalled that writers initially discussed introducing Mrs. Claus at the end of the first “Violent Night,” rather than saving the moment for the follow-up.

McCormick described the near-miss as a storyline beat tied to last Christmas’s events in the franchise, where David Harbour’s Santa nearly “gave his heart to the wrong Mrs. Claus” before the production course-corrected. She said the next day after the team’s initial work, the writers discarded the scene rather than moving forward with the version that would have placed Mrs. Claus in the first movie’s finale.

The producer said that the choice mattered not just for pacing, but for how the character would have been framed in the wider story and with the cast audience was expected to meet. McCormick said that had the ending scene stayed in place, the sequel’s Mrs. Claus would have been “totally different” from Kristen Bell’s portrayal.

According to McCormick, the creative team’s decision to remove the scene was made quickly, after the writers revisited what they had done the previous day. She characterized the replacement as a deliberate reset, aimed at ensuring the franchise’s “Mrs. Claus” reveal landed in “Violent Night 2” with the right character identity and audience expectation.

That context places Bell’s introduction in the sequel against a background of last Christmas’s near-miss in the first film. Harbour’s Santa remains the central figure across the two installments, and the producer’s comments suggest the first movie’s ending had briefly been used as a place to plant the Mrs. Claus thread before it was pulled back to preserve a clearer setup for the sequel.

While the interview centered on a removed scene and how it would have reshaped the Mrs. Claus reveal, the producer also tied the change to the franchise’s larger storytelling approach: timing matters in a sequel, especially when introducing a new central character who anchors the audience’s understanding of Santa’s family and relationships.

With “Violent Night 2” set to premiere Dec. 4, Bell’s Mrs. Claus will be the payoff for what McCormick described as a fast-cut storyline that would have introduced the character earlier but altered her presentation in ways she said would have differed sharply from Bell’s version.

McCormick’s comments also underscore how studio and creative teams manage continuity during development, including last-minute edits to major beats that can carry forward into future installments. In this case, the sequel’s lead-in includes a backstory of a scene that did not make it into the first film, leaving the eventual reveal for the sequel’s release window.
