White House press secretary Davis Ingle criticized New York congressional candidate George Conway (D) after Conway’s campaign ad said he would pursue impeachment of President Donald Trump.
The White House on Tuesday criticized an ad aired by congressional candidate George Conway that said he would seek to impeach President Donald Trump, setting off fresh friction between the administration and a well-known critic of the president running for Congress in New York.
In comments to The Hill, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle dismissed Conway as a political figure promoting a plan he called unrealistic. Ingle characterized Conway as “Lightweight George Conway” and said his impeachment pledge reflected what Ingle described as “a stupid person’s idea of a smart person.”
Ingle also referenced Conway’s health, saying Conway has “severe and debilitating disease” and implying that the candidate’s impeachment messaging was not appropriate. The White House did not specify what actions Conway would take beyond the impeachment commitment stated in the ad, according to the report.
Conway, who has been an outspoken critic of Trump, is running as a Democrat for a seat in New York, The Hill reported. The controversy centered on Conway’s congressional campaign advertisement rather than a pending court case, legislation, or a White House enforcement action.
The White House’s remarks came as Democrats and Republicans continue to trade competing views about impeachment as a constitutional process, with impeachment requiring action through Congress and ultimate disposition through Senate proceedings. The White House did not announce any new policy changes or legal steps in response to Conway’s ad.
While impeachment is often discussed during election cycles, the practical effect of a campaign pledge depends on whether any impeachment effort is introduced in Congress and on subsequent votes in the House and trial proceedings in the Senate. The White House did not describe any concrete congressional strategy tied to Conway’s ad.
The Hill reported that the White House’s pushback focused on Conway’s credibility and health, rather than contesting the mechanics of impeachment itself. Conway’s campaign did not appear in the cited report to provide a direct response to Ingle’s characterization in the immediate aftermath.
