WKYT First Alert: Chances for showers increase in eastern Kentucky Monday afternoon

After a sweltering stretch of weather, WKYT meteorologist Sabrina Ullman said Kentucky will see more normal temperatures in the coming week, though multiple chances of rain are in the forecast. Ullman’s Sunday update calls for increased cloud coverage through the day, with afternoon highs mostly in the 80s.

Ullman said there is a chance of an isolated shower around noon. Later in the day, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected in eastern Kentucky after 1 p.m., continuing into the early evening. The Sunday rain potential is described as primarily affecting areas from Whitley County toward Ashland and farther east.

Even with heavy cloud cover, Ullman warned that ultraviolet exposure can still be significant. The forecast calls for a UV Index peak of 9 at 2 p.m., which can still cause sunburn on a cloudy day, so sun protection is recommended.

Looking ahead to Monday, Ullman said rain chances return to the Bluegrass region in the afternoon and become widespread in the evening. That round of rain may extend into Tuesday morning, increasing the odds of wet conditions across additional parts of the state rather than only eastern Kentucky.

A second period of rain is also forecast to enter central Kentucky on Thursday, with rain chances continuing through next weekend. Ullman’s update indicated that while temperatures are expected to be more bearable for residents compared with the earlier heat, storm timing and rainfall could still affect travel, outdoor plans, and day-to-day activities.

The National Weather Service and local emergency management agencies may issue watches or warnings if conditions evolve, particularly with thunderstorms. Residents are advised to monitor updates for localized changes in timing, because storm tracks can shift from county to county and hourly changes can affect roads and outdoor work schedules.
