The White House says the planned meeting with major refiners will focus on actions it says can increase refining capacity and improve gasoline affordability ahead of the midterm election cycle.
President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with U.S. refiners as the White House presses for near-term steps it says could help lower gasoline prices and address affordability concerns, according to CNBC.
The meeting is being framed by White House officials as part of a broader effort to improve the supply side of the fuels market, with the administration arguing that additional refining capacity and operational changes by industry could reduce price pressures for consumers more quickly than longer-term structural adjustments.
In its announcement of the planned meeting, the White House linked the timing to political and economic pressures heading into the midterm election environment, saying that rising gas prices and fuel affordability remain a central public concern that the administration intends to address through direct engagement with major refiners.
The White House characterization focuses on actions that could be implemented faster, with officials describing the goal as boosting refining capacity. Under that approach, the administration is seeking commitments or operational steps from refiners that it believes could translate into more product availability for the market in the near term.
The refiners to be included in the meeting were not detailed in the information provided with the announcement, nor were specific policy proposals or regulatory actions described in the summary available for this report.
Outside the meeting, the White House effort reflects a recurring policy challenge in U.S. energy markets, where gasoline prices can be influenced by multiple factors including global oil pricing, refinery maintenance schedules, seasonal demand, and logistics constraints, as well as any changes in domestic refining output.
If the meeting results in public commitments, the next step will be determining how quickly any promised actions can affect actual refinery throughput and downstream fuel distribution, and whether the administration will pair industry outreach with additional policy measures.
For consumers and state and local economies, the immediate question will be whether near-term refinery and capacity steps can dampen price increases in time to be felt at the pump, particularly as the administration’s messaging ties fuel costs to public attention during the election cycle.
