The Israel Defense Forces said it carried out airstrikes on what it described as Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon after the group fired more than 50 projectiles toward Israeli forces, despite a ceasefire in effect.
Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon reportedly killed several people on June 20, according to BBC reporting, even as a ceasefire was said to be in place. The Israeli military said the strikes were carried out after Hezbollah fired over 50 projectiles toward Israeli forces in southern Lebanon.
The IDF said it struck “Hezbollah terrorist targets,” linking the operation to the barrage reported in the hours before the strikes. The BBC report described the strikes occurring in the context of continuing cross-border fire and security incidents along the frontier.
The incident renewed attention on whether the ceasefire is holding in practice. While ceasefire arrangements are intended to reduce immediate hostilities and limit civilian harm, the Israeli statement tied its use of force to projectile fire, underscoring that each side is characterizing the conflict through security incidents rather than a full halt in operations.
In Gaza and Lebanon, the broader regional environment has included heightened military activity and frequent allegations of violations. In this case, the BBC report focused on the timing of the strikes and the Israeli explanation that they were carried out in response to Hezbollah rocket and other projectile fire.
The BBC report did not provide a confirmed breakdown of how many people were killed, their identities, or whether the deaths included civilians or fighters. It also did not specify the exact locations struck beyond reference to southern Lebanon areas connected to the cross-border exchanges.
Next steps are expected to hinge on further assessment of the strike damage and casualties, as well as additional statements from Israeli officials and Hezbollah, and any monitoring or enforcement mechanisms tied to the ceasefire. With both sides pointing to security incidents, diplomats and regional stakeholders are likely to press for clarification about what constitutes a ceasefire violation and how quickly hostilities should stop.
The incident also illustrates the public-safety stakes of the Israel-Lebanon border area, where sudden airstrikes and incoming projectiles can affect local residents, emergency services, and community stability, especially in periods when hostilities are supposed to be restrained.
