Mali Army Says Rebels Target Gao and Sévaré as Azawad Liberation Front Announces New Offensive Toward Anefis

Malian authorities said Saturday that armed groups launched attacks in several northern towns, naming Gao and Sévaré among the targets, as a rebel faction announced a new push to capture a town in the region. Mohamed Cissé, a resident of Gao, told the AP that the army was going door to door in the city searching for attackers who were still in the area. Another resident, Ousmane Maiga, said that while the city had returned to calm at the time he spoke, attackers may still have been present in part of Gao, prompting him to stay inside with his family.

The reported violence comes amid a broader pattern of insurgency and regional spillover. In April, a coordinated attack blamed on the FLA and the jihadist group JNIM killed Mali’s defense minister in his home and seized control of several key northern towns. Neighboring Niger and Burkina Faso have also been coping with attacks by similar militant networks, and the area has seen heightened security tensions since coups in recent years.

Analysts cited by the AP suggested the latest targeting could be aimed at diverting attention from other areas. Ibrahim Yahaya Ibrahim, deputy project director for the International Crisis Group think tank, said the newest attacks were “nothing comparable” to April’s violence, but that cross-border attacks in Burkina Faso as well as in Mali could indicate an attempt to shift the Malian army’s focus toward securing more limited gains in the north.
