The U.S. space agency says the telescope is beginning a multi-year mission to build a new map of the cosmos and study the forces behind dark energy and dark matter.
NASA has launched a new space telescope that the agency says will be able to observe parts of the universe at a scale far beyond the view provided by the Hubble Space Telescope, starting what is described as a multi-year mission focused on building a new cosmic map.
According to BBC World, the telescope is intended to collect observations that will allow scientists to expand on what is known about dark energy and dark matter, two components that account for most of the universe’s mass-energy content but remain poorly understood. NASA’s objective, as characterized in the report, is to use the new dataset to improve measurements of how the universe evolves over time.
The BBC report says the instrument will be capable of seeing about 100 times more than Hubble. It frames that capability as central to the mission’s design, because a wider and deeper set of observations is expected to improve researchers’ ability to test theories about the universe’s expansion and the large-scale structure formed by gravity.
The launch begins a timeline that NASA has described as stretching across years, rather than a single near-term observational campaign. The mission’s multi-year structure is intended to let scientists gather enough observations to support statistical analyses, which are particularly important for studies that aim to characterize subtle effects tied to cosmic acceleration and the distribution of matter.
The telescope’s primary mission, as summarized by BBC World, is to create an updated map of the universe. In practice, such mapping efforts involve repeatedly imaging wide regions of sky and then comparing those observations to models of how galaxies form and cluster, with the goal of isolating patterns that can be linked to dark energy and dark matter.
NASA’s stated focus on dark energy and dark matter places the program within long-running international astronomy efforts to understand fundamental physics using astrophysical measurements. The BBC report ties the telescope’s expected performance to that goal, emphasizing the larger observational reach compared with Hubble.
As the mission proceeds, the next phases are expected to be dominated by commissioning and calibration activities, followed by the steady collection of science data needed for the mapping work. The report does not identify further milestones in detail, but the multi-year framing suggests that results will be released in stages as datasets are finalized and analyzed.
