Authorities say survivors have been transported to safe areas in Nepal after catastrophic flash flooding along the Nepal-China border, while families of nearly 3,000 people await updates during a nearly weeklong search-and-rescue push.
Rescue operations along the Nepal-China border entered a fourth day on Saturday as Nepal authorities reported that flood survivors had begun reaching safer areas, even as officials continued to search for people still unaccounted for after catastrophic flash flooding. The effort has relied on ground teams moving through devastated communities and transporting survivors out of flood-affected zones, with families awaiting information about loved ones who were swept away.
The Washington Times reported that rescue teams were still finding survivors and moving them to safety in affected areas as the search progressed. The situation has been complicated by the sheer scope of the damage and the difficulty of reaching communities that were buried by floodwaters after sudden surges.
Officials have said the missing list is close to 3,000 people, according to the report, and the continuing search is focused on locating those unaccounted for and verifying accounts of who has been found. As each day passes, authorities have continued the priority of confirming survivor status while extending search coverage where conditions allow.
The report described the response as an ongoing emergency operation rather than a fully completed recovery. Survivors were reportedly being directed toward safe areas, while rescue teams worked to identify additional victims and assess which areas remained accessible for further searches.
For families, the delay between last contact and official confirmation has remained a major concern. The Washington Times described relatives waiting for news as the rescue effort continued, with uncertainty persisting for those whose whereabouts remain unknown.
In practical terms, authorities have treated the operation as a race against time for both survivors who may be located in hard-to-reach places and for the broader need to restore baseline safety and order in flood-impacted communities. The continued use of rescue corridors and transport to safe locations reflects the public-safety focus of the response.
As of Saturday’s report, the rescue work was still underway and the search remained active in communities affected by the flash floods. The next phase, depending on access and damage assessments, is expected to include continued recovery efforts and updates to missing-person lists, though the extent and timeline of that work was not detailed in the report.
