Emergency officials sent flood warning notices to residents’ phones early Sunday while teams cleared a major highway route linking Kathmandu to one of the areas hit hardest by last week’s catastrophic floods.
Nepal’s disaster management authorities issued warnings of possible additional flooding early Sunday, telling residents in affected and downstream areas to prepare as rescue and recovery operations continued from the catastrophic floods earlier this week. According to PBS NewsHour, notices were sent to people’s mobile phones, indicating that officials expected conditions could worsen again even as teams focused on restoring access and aid routes.
The floods have already inflicted widespread damage across multiple communities, leaving residents dealing with destroyed homes and disrupted services. With waterways still volatile, officials used the phone alerts to reach people quickly rather than relying only on physical notice boards or radio updates, a method intended to reduce the time between an official warning and a household response.
Rescue crews and local responders were also working to clear a major highway connecting Kathmandu to one of the regions described as among the worst hit by the Wednesday disaster. PBS NewsHour reported that the road clearing was underway as part of an effort to improve movement of rescue personnel, medical support, food and other essentials, and to help residents reach services that have been difficult to access since the flooding.
The timing of the new warning came while communities were still processing the impacts of the earlier floods, and when infrastructure access remained a central challenge. In such events, road closures and debris can slow both evacuation and relief delivery, increasing the hardship for families cut off from aid and delaying repairs needed to restore basic transportation and communications.
While authorities urged precaution because of the risk of fresh flooding, the immediate focus remained operational: maintaining readiness for potential new rises in water levels, continuing search-and-rescue work where needed, and keeping key routes as clear as possible. Restoring the Kathmandu link is particularly important because it can serve as a corridor for coordinating assistance across districts and for getting government and humanitarian resources to affected areas.
Officials’ use of phone-based alerts underscores an emphasis on rapid public communication during fast-moving hazards. Sunday’s warnings also reflect the longer operational reality that even after the worst of an initial flooding event, secondary hazards such as renewed heavy rainfall or unstable slopes can extend danger and make recovery more difficult.
