Demonstrators in southern Albania have taken to the streets to oppose a proposed development on Sazan Island, an Adriatic jewel being marketed for a high-end resort. The plan linked to Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner has drawn criticism from residents and supporters of protections for the island’s environment and local control.
Sazan Island, a small Adriatic island off Albania’s coast and once used as a Cold War-era military base, has become the center of fresh public unrest after opponents said a Kushner-Trump-linked resort proposal would reshape the island and limit Albanians’ say over its future. The controversy has spilled into protests, reflecting a wider tension between real estate development ambitions and local concerns about preserving the island’s natural character.
PBS NewsHour reported that Sazan, which has since been incorporated into an area described as a nature preserve, has attracted developers seeking to build on its scenic setting. The proposal tied to Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, according to the report, has been framed by backers as an opportunity for investment and tourism, while opponents say the project would transfer control of land and resources away from local communities.
Supporters of the protest effort have argued that the island is not simply a blank slate for large-scale development, pointing to its current status as protected nature and its identity as a place shaped by Albanians’ control of their territory. In the report, residents and demonstrators are described as resisting what they view as an externally driven plan that would alter the island in ways they say are not adequately justified or safeguarded.
The report also highlighted Sazan’s history, describing the island as a former strategic military site before transitioning to its present status. That history, supporters say, makes the island especially sensitive for Albanians, who have memories of how the peninsula and its surrounding waters were used in earlier eras and want to prevent a new wave of outsiders from dictating the island’s next chapter.
While the details of any permits, contracts, or formal legal proceedings were not included in the available report summary, the protests underscore that the development proposal is not proceeding without political and social resistance. Demonstrations of this kind can raise pressure on Albanian authorities tasked with reviewing land use decisions, environmental compliance, and any investment arrangements involving public interests.
For now, the central question remains whether Albanian officials will require modifications, additional safeguards, or a different review path before any development can move forward, and how the government will balance investment and tourism goals against environmental and community concerns raised by protesters.
The PBS reporting described Sazan as both a natural asset and a target for development, meaning that the next steps will likely depend on how project backers and Albanian regulators address public objections and whether the island’s protected status limits what can be built there.
