Police and rescue officials said the collapse occurred at a tutoring center that was under construction in Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore on Tuesday, with at least 14 schoolchildren killed.
A roof collapse at a tutoring center under construction in Lahore, Pakistan, killed at least 14 children on Tuesday, according to police and rescue officials, who responded to the site and began removing children from the rubble.
The building, described by officials as a tutoring center that was still under construction, was in the process of being built or modified when the roof failed, officials said in their accounts of the incident.
Emergency responders reached the area following reports of the collapse, with police and rescue personnel working together at the scene, where they confirmed fatalities among schoolchildren.
Officials did not specify in the initial reporting how many other people may have been injured or how many were inside at the time, but the death toll was described as “at least 14,” indicating that authorities expected the number could change as rescue efforts continued.
The incident has raised renewed scrutiny of construction practices in areas where educational facilities and supplementary learning centers operate, especially where work may be ongoing and safety standards are critical.
As authorities continue to handle the scene, officials are expected to document the circumstances of the collapse and review whether the site complied with applicable building and safety requirements, although the initial reports did not provide details on any identified causes.
Local responders and police will likely determine next steps based on what investigators find at the site, including whether additional victims are recovered and how the incident is categorized in official records.
