Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said a Russian strike hit a warehouse near homes and that investigators are examining whether it was used to store ammunition, after the attack killed 27 people and sparked questions about munitions handling near residential areas.
A Russian strike on a warehouse in Ukraine killed 27 people and prompted an investigation into the site’s use for ammunition storage, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday, according to CBS News. Zelenskyy linked the deadly blast to a location near a residential area, raising questions about how close munitions-related activities were to civilians.
CBS News reported that the attack killed 27 people, while emergency response and subsequent damage assessments continued as Ukrainian officials examined what was struck and why the explosion occurred. The president said the investigation is focused on whether the warehouse was used to store ammunition, a point he suggested in the aftermath of the strike.
In remarks cited by CBS News, Zelenskyy said the warehouse’s proximity to housing was significant, because it bears on how the site was arranged and what materials were present. He characterized the incident as more than a single strike, framing it as an evidence-driven review of the ammunition question that has been central to Ukraine’s broader dispute over the placement and use of weapons in areas where civilians live.
The reports of ammunition-related activity come amid an ongoing information and accountability battle in the war, where both sides regularly contest details of strikes and the context around targets. While Zelenskyy’s statement points investigators toward ammunition storage, the CBS News report does not provide independent verification of the warehouse’s contents at the time of the blast, underscoring that the findings are expected to come from Ukraine’s investigative work.
Ukrainian authorities typically conduct damage assessments, collect evidence from the strike site, and attempt to establish the nature of the target, including what materials were stored there. In this case, Zelenskyy’s public comments report that the ammunition question is intended to be answered through a formal process rather than relying on immediate battlefield claims.
The strike’s impact on civilians, however, is already clear from the death toll reported by CBS News. For residents in and around the affected area, the incident highlights the risks posed when military-related facilities and civilian neighborhoods overlap, even when the exact details of storage are still being examined.
CBS News said the president’s suggestion that ammunition was stored near homes has now fueled the investigation. The next steps, according to the same reporting, will depend on investigators’ access to evidence from the site and on whether they can substantiate claims about the warehouse’s role before and during the attack.
