The regional governor said a girl, 14, was among those killed after overnight attacks near Ukraine’s capital, prompting evacuations in affected areas.
Strikes near Kyiv overnight left at least 27 people dead and prompted the evacuation of hundreds of residents, the Kyiv region’s governor said on August 29. The attacks, carried out in the early hours, hit areas outside the capital, according to the governor’s statement reported by BBC World.
The governor said a 14-year-old girl was among those killed. BBC World reported that the deaths brought the confirmed toll to at least 27, with additional details on victims and the scope of damage to be determined as emergency teams worked the affected areas.
The same statement said that hundreds of people were evacuated from areas impacted by the attacks. Evacuations were carried out to reduce the risk to civilians as responders assessed damage, cleared debris, and continued searches for victims in the hours after the strikes.
Ukrainian officials have frequently described attacks near major cities as a mix of long-range fire and other forms of attack designed to disrupt civilian life and strain local emergency response capacity. In this case, the governor tied the evacuations to the immediate public-safety needs created by the overnight strikes and the continuing hazards in damaged areas.
BBC World said the attacks occurred overnight, underscoring how quickly impacts can accumulate before daylight and how local authorities rely on rapid coordination among regional administrations, emergency services, and local authorities to move residents to safer locations.
As of the time of the report, it remained unclear from the information provided by BBC World what specific targets were hit or what weapon types were used in the attack. The governor’s statement focused on the confirmed death toll and the evacuation of civilians, with additional assessments expected to follow.
The incident adds to the pattern of periodic shelling and air-attack alerts around Ukraine’s capital and surrounding regions, where civilians are often warned to take shelter and where local officials continue to manage the balance between search-and-rescue operations and civilian protection.
