Protesters gathered in central Geneva as leaders prepared for a G7 meeting in nearby France, with police firing tear gas after projectiles were thrown and firefighters responding to a vehicle fire close to the march route.
Thousands of demonstrators gathered in Geneva on June 14 as preparations continued for a G7 summit planned for nearby France, according to on-scene reporting. Protesters marched in the area as leaders moved through security arrangements for the upcoming international meeting.
As the demonstration progressed, police responded to violence directed at officers. The report said police used tear gas after projectiles were thrown at them during the rally. Riot police moved to contain the most disruptive activity as demonstrators and police clashed near parts of the route.
Firefighters were also dispatched during the unrest. Minutes before the march reached the most heavily secured areas, a car was reported burning near the route, and crews were brought in to address the fire. Riot police cordoned off a secure zone around the scene to allow firefighters to work.
The security response reflected the layered restrictions typically used around major international gatherings. The report described riot police establishing barriers and controlling access in the immediate vicinity of the protest and emergency operations.
Swiss public safety authorities and local responders coordinated in real time with the police perimeter, as the march unfolded alongside emergency services. The report noted that the firefighters’ work took place inside the cordoned area created by riot police.
By late afternoon, the focus remained on maintaining public safety while the summit preparations continued on schedule for the leaders meeting in France. Organizers and authorities were expected to continue enforcing security measures around the summit period, including crowd control and emergency access arrangements for responders.
