The National Hurricane Center says Dolly, which formed Thursday, is moving quickly toward the Leeward Islands and is expected to bring heavy rain and localized flash flooding this weekend.
A tropical storm moving quickly across the Atlantic, Dolly is expected to approach the Leeward Islands and bring significant rainfall to parts of the Caribbean this weekend, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said Friday. The agency warned that the storm’s fast pace could still leave weather-system totals high enough to trigger flash flooding in some areas.
The NHC said Dolly formed on Thursday and had maximum sustained winds near 40 mph as of Friday morning. The storm’s forecast track would carry it toward the Leeward Islands, where residents may experience increasingly dangerous conditions as the weekend approaches.
While the storm is forecast to affect multiple areas in the Caribbean, the most immediate public-safety concern highlighted by the NHC is rainfall intensity.
