The planned U.S. operation, described earlier as a “VERY HARD TONIGHT” response and an effort aimed at Iran’s oil infrastructure, was called off hours later, according to a report citing Trump’s remarks.
Donald Trump canceled a set of U.S. strikes against Iran that were scheduled for Thursday evening, according to a CNBC report published Thursday. The decision came after Trump had warned earlier in the day that the United States would attack Iran “VERY HARD TONIGHT,” and that the operation would include actions aimed at Iran’s oil infrastructure assets, the report said.
The CNBC report described the threatened U.S. action as involving Iran’s petroleum-related infrastructure, including Kharg Island, a major Iranian oil export hub. Earlier comments attributed to Trump also framed the moves as connected to Iran’s broader oil and energy capacity, setting expectations that any strike would focus not only on security targets but also on assets tied to energy output and export.
Hours after Trump’s warning, the report said the strikes were canceled, altering the immediate security outlook for the evening period when the operation had been planned. The report did not provide additional operational detail beyond the timing, the stated intent Trump associated with the threatened action, and the later cancellation.
Iran and U.S. officials were not included in the CNBC summary as providing a separate contemporaneous account of the decision. With only the report as a public basis in this record, it remains unclear whether the cancellation reflected changes in targeting, shifts in diplomatic or intelligence assessments, legal or procedural review, or other operational constraints.
The cancellation matters for regional public safety and for international energy interests. When military action is publicly telegraphed, it can affect aviation and shipping routes, market expectations, and the planning of governments seeking to protect civilians. Strikes described as aimed at oil infrastructure can also carry implications for supply chains and downstream economic costs, even when the operations do not ultimately occur.
For U.S. policy and governance, the timing gap between the warning and the cancellation raises questions about decision-making and authorization processes for high-consequence military actions. The report does not specify which officials were involved in the cancellation or what procedural steps were used after Trump’s initial statement that suggested imminent action.
The next steps depend on how quickly authorities clarify the reason for the cancellation and whether any alternative measures are pursued. Without additional documentation or official confirmation beyond the reporting cited here, the public record currently shows only that a previously scheduled Thursday evening strike plan was called off after Trump’s earlier warning.
