In remarks published Saturday, President Donald Trump said he expects British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to step down and said he “wishes him well,” while also criticizing Starmer amid reporting about his longer-term political plans.
President Donald Trump said he believes United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer will resign and told Starmer to “wishes him well,” according to remarks reported by Fox News on June 21, 2026. The comments were made against a backdrop of separate reporting about Starmer’s potential political future, with Trump positioning the move as an imminent change in leadership.
In the report, Trump’s statements did not cite a specific date for any resignation, and they did not provide additional confirmation from the British government regarding timing or process. Trump’s remarks also included criticism of Starmer, though the report summarized the criticism without detailing a specific policy measure or legislative dispute.
Starmer, who leads the UK government, has not been described in the Fox News report as having announced a resignation or laid out a formal timetable for departure. Under the UK political system, a prime minister’s resignation would typically result from internal government and party processes, followed by formal steps for replacement through the Crown and the ruling party’s leadership procedures.
The Trump comments are expected to draw attention because they come from a U.S. president commenting publicly on the leadership stability of a close U.K. ally. U.S.-U.K. coordination on issues such as defense, intelligence, trade, and diplomacy often relies on continuity at the head of government, making leadership transitions a practical concern even when no immediate change is announced.
Beyond the immediate leadership question, the remarks add to the political narrative surrounding Starmer that other outlets have been reporting, according to the Fox News coverage. The distinction remains important, however, between speculation about an individual’s political plans and official actions taken by a sitting prime minister or the UK government.
No additional government statement from Downing Street was included in the Fox News report. As with any claim about a future resignation, confirmation would require an official announcement or an appropriate domestic process set in motion by the British government and ruling party.
If Starmer were to step down, the next steps in the UK would follow established institutional channels, including the selection of a new prime minister by the governing party and subsequent formal arrangements. Until then, Trump’s remarks remain a U.S. presidential forecast rather than a notification tied to a UK government decision.
