The U.K. says it will restrict access to social media platforms for under-16s starting next year, joining several other countries that have already moved to limit teen use.
U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a near-total ban on social media for children under age 16, setting the policy to begin next year, according to CBS News. The announcement marks one of the most sweeping attempts in the U.K. to regulate a major online activity by age, with the government framing the change as a measure aimed at protecting children.
Under the plan described by Starmer, children below 16 would face restrictions on social media access, with the policy scheduled to start in the coming year. The CBS report characterizes the government action as a near-total ban rather than a limited requirement or opt-in approach, and it ties implementation to a defined timeline rather than a broad, indefinite review.
The announcement arrives as other countries have adopted similar age-based limits. CBS News reported that bans or major restrictions for minors are already in place in Australia, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The U.K. move therefore follows an emerging pattern of national governments using age thresholds and access limits to address risks associated with social media use among minors.
While details of the enforcement method were not provided in the CBS description, the proposal is expected to require mechanisms to identify users who are under 16 and to restrict access accordingly. For families, schools, and children, the practical effect will depend on how platforms verify ages and how the policy is implemented across services that operate through accounts, mobile apps, and web access.
Public policy officials typically face a balancing challenge in such rules, especially around due process and practical compliance. The CBS report does not describe exemptions, appeals, or treatment of special circumstances, and those elements would be important in determining how the rule works for children who use social media for school projects, communications with relatives, or other non-social uses.
If enacted on schedule as described, the U.K. policy will place new compliance obligations on social media providers and intermediaries operating in the U.K. market, including costs related to age verification, system changes, and monitoring. It will also test how quickly platforms and regulators can align privacy practices with the goal of limiting access for younger users.
The U.K. government’s next steps are expected to involve translating the announcement into implemented rules and timelines for platform compliance, as well as clarifying how the restriction is applied and what constitutes access. CBS News reported the policy will take effect next year, making near-term legislative and administrative action the key task before restrictions begin for under-16s.
