A fire broke out at a Moscow-area oil refinery after drones launched from Ukraine, according to Russian officials and reports carried by PBS NewsHour. The incident adds to a pattern of Ukraine striking Russian fuel infrastructure amid the war, with some Russian regions reporting disruptions in fuel supply.
Ukrainian drones set a fire at an oil refinery near Moscow on June 18, Russian officials said, in an attack they described as part of strikes targeting the Russian capital and its economic base. PBS NewsHour reported that the incident involved drones and that the refinery blaze was significant enough to draw attention to the broader campaign aimed at Russia’s energy sector.
The refinery attack comes amid what PBS NewsHour described as Ukraine’s repeated focus on Russian oil facilities. The reported goal is to reduce revenue used to sustain the war effort and to create tangible consequences for people in areas that Ukraine is able to reach within range of drone operations.
Russian officials and local reporting characterized the event as a major attempt to hit Moscow-linked infrastructure. The report also said the attack triggered a response from emergency services at the affected facility, with fire crews working to contain the blaze.
In addition to the damage at the refinery, PBS NewsHour reported that some areas in Russia have experienced fuel shortages, a development it linked to attacks on energy infrastructure and related disruptions. The publication did not provide specific figures, timelines, or the extent of any shortages tied to the Moscow-area fire.
The refinery incident highlights the strategic contest over energy and logistics during the war. Strikes on fuel production and processing facilities are designed to affect domestic supply chains, complicate operations, and potentially influence how quickly Russia can maintain flows of fuel needed for industry and military activity.
It was also reported that Ukraine has sought to make those effects visible beyond the front lines, by carrying out attacks that reach major population centers and critical economic assets. The Moscow-area refinery fire fits within that broader pattern described by PBS NewsHour.
For authorities and residents, the immediate next steps are likely to include damage assessments at the facility, continued fire safety actions, and any adjustments to fuel distribution if shortages widen. Russian officials have not been quoted in the PBS NewsHour report on potential timelines for restoration or the precise operational status of the refinery after the blaze.
