The first quake was recorded at magnitude 7.1 at a shallow depth, with tremors felt in neighboring Colombia and damage reported to homes and buildings in north-central Venezuela.
A powerful earthquake struck north-central Venezuela on Wednesday afternoon, shaking buildings and prompting reports of collapses in affected communities, according to The Guardian. The quake was followed by additional strong tremors, described as back-to-back earthquakes, as residents in the region sought shelter and assessed damage.
The earthquake was reported at magnitude 7.1 in Venezuela, located about an hour west of Valencia, at a depth of 13 km (about 8 miles). The U.S. Geological Survey and other seismological monitoring bodies typically publish such parameters, and the report described the event as occurring west of Caracas in the country’s northern interior.
Residents also reported feeling the shaking in neighboring Colombia. The transnational tremor accounts underscored the scale of the initial event, which propagated across a wider area than just the immediate epicentral zone.
Beyond the shaking, the report said homes and buildings collapsed. In an emergency context, building failures can quickly compound the risks of injury, especially where older housing stock or non-engineered structures are common, and where communications and emergency services may be strained in the hours after a large quake.
The Guardian characterized the incident as occurring as part of a short sequence of strong movements rather than a single isolated jolt. Aftershock patterns in large earthquakes can extend for days, and repeated shaking increases the risk of further structural damage for buildings already weakened by the first rupture.
With no verified casualty figures or damage totals included in the account provided, authorities and regional emergency services would typically begin damage assessments and infrastructure checks once roads reopen and monitoring confirms whether additional hazards are ongoing. Those steps are commonly necessary to determine which neighborhoods can safely shelter residents and which structures need immediate evacuation.
The next practical updates expected from public agencies are likely to include official seismological confirmation of the sequence, emergency response coordination for affected areas, and preliminary damage assessments by municipality. Until such information is released, early reports of collapses and injuries tend to be incomplete and subject to revision as teams confirm what was damaged and where.
In the wider regional context, the event is likely to renew attention to preparedness measures in north-central Venezuela and border areas where shaking was felt, including public guidance on safe behavior during aftershocks and coordination for medical and rescue capacity.
