Venezuela quake rescue enters more desperate phase as government death toll rises to 1,700

Rescue operations in Venezuela stretched into a more desperate phase after back-to-back earthquakes that struck about five days ago, with families and emergency teams continuing to search for relatives believed trapped under rubble. In the aftermath, communities across affected areas have been sifting debris and checking damaged structures, hoping to locate survivors as rescue access remained limited in collapsed neighborhoods.

The Venezuelan government updated the national death toll to 1,700 people killed, according to PBS NewsHour reporting. The government said the figure is expected to rise further as crews reach more affected sites and as damage assessments continue. The latest updates underscore how quickly confirmed casualty counts can change as rescues extend beyond the immediate hours after the shaking.

The search effort has faced a growing challenge as an aftershock rattled the country, adding to instability and further complicating rescue work. Aftershocks can bring down weakened structures and affect safe movement of personnel and equipment, forcing responders to adjust operations to account for the evolving hazard.

As the death toll climbs, families have continued to look for signs of survivors, gathering at sites where buildings collapsed and marking areas where loved ones were last seen. The continued presence of residents and emergency workers at disaster zones reflects the long, labor-intensive character of earthquake response, where victims can remain concealed under debris for days.

Venezuela’s response has also involved ongoing coordination of emergency activity while authorities update information for the public. PBS NewsHour reported that the government’s latest casualty figures were intended to reflect new findings from the field, while also warning that the toll could increase as the work continues.

Officials and responders have to balance the urgency of locating missing people with the risks posed by damaged infrastructure and continuing seismic activity. With another aftershock reported during the ongoing operations, rescue teams must prioritize stability checks and secure access routes before entering the most hazardous areas for further searches.
