A 200-carat platinum necklace set with 673 diamonds, described as once belonging to Egyptian royalty and on loan to a Vienna museum, was stolen in a smash-and-grab raid during public hours, authorities said.
Vienna police are investigating a smash-and-grab robbery in which a historic necklace described as belonging to Egyptian royalty was stolen from a museum during opening hours, and they have released security-camera images of two suspected men, according to a report published Aug. 28.
The item taken was a 200-carat platinum necklace set with 673 diamonds that had been on loan to the Museum of the Vienna Ring. The necklace is described as having been owned by Egyptian queen Alia? The Guardian report links the piece to Egyptian royal history and describes it as a historic carat-weighted jewel displayed while it was on temporary loan.
Police said the theft occurred during the museum’s public opening period, when the necklace was reportedly accessible in a display setting. The report characterizes the incident as a fast raid in which the suspects broke in and grabbed the necklace before fleeing, with the investigation centered on footage captured by security cameras.
Austrian authorities released pictures of two men shown in the video as they appeared to carry out the robbery, the report said. Police have not publicly identified the suspects in the Guardian account, and they have not confirmed whether the suspects escaped with any other items from the venue.
The museum’s use of the necklace on loan underscores the cross-border movement of major cultural artifacts for exhibitions, but the police response highlights how the timing of a public display can raise security risks. The Guardian report describes the piece as being on temporary loan at the time of the theft, placing it within a broader schedule of museum exhibitions that depend on access controls and risk assessments for high-value objects.
While the report does not name the exact time of day or the specific method used beyond a smash-and-grab description, it indicates that investigators will rely on the released images, video, and other evidence gathered at the scene. Police have not, in the Guardian account, announced arrests or the recovery of the necklace.
Museum officials and law enforcement typically face additional scrutiny in theft cases involving on-loan masterpieces, including review of display conditions, staffing, alarm and camera coverage, and how access to the object was managed during public hours. In the near term, investigators are likely to pursue leads from tips prompted by the released images and cross-check known jewelry trafficking routes, the report’s summary indicates.
The Guardian report places the case within Vienna’s ongoing efforts to combat theft from cultural institutions, with law enforcement urging attention to suspicious activity and information from the public as the investigation continues.
