A new executive order signed by President Donald Trump is prompting Apple to review whether the lake long known as Lake Ontario should be relabeled as “Lake America” for U.S. map users, following similar naming changes reported at Google.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order last week directing that the body of water long known as Lake Ontario be renamed “Lake America,” setting off a potential change to how major technology companies display the label for U.S. users. The order, according to reporting by Deadline, is tied to a broader trade dispute with Canada that has included public threats, with the name change framed as part of the administration’s response.
Deadline reported that Apple may soon follow Google by updating its mapping products to use the new name for U.S. users. The report characterizes the change as an Apple review of whether the label visible to American customers should be updated to reflect the executive order.
The same Deadline report says Google has already begun using “Lake America” for at least some U.S. search and map contexts. While the report does not detail specific Apple or Google deployment timelines, it frames the Apple step as a potential next move after Google’s earlier adjustment, suggesting competitive and compliance pressure on consumer-facing map labels.
The practical effect of a naming shift extends beyond map screenshots. For households and businesses, the location label can influence everything from routing prompts and local search results to how online services classify addresses and landmarks. In addition, large-scale naming changes can cascade into third-party applications that reuse the underlying naming conventions from major platform providers, affecting consistency across navigation and local information tools.
Apple’s decision, as described in the Deadline report, would likely focus on how it complies with federal directives for consumer content displayed to U.S. users. Because map labels are presented in multiple contexts, any transition typically requires updates to search indexing, map tiles, and user-facing text, along with QA and localization workflows for different languages and accessibility settings.
Deadline’s reporting also places the executive order within a broader U.S.-Canada trade dispute, an issue that has repeatedly generated symbolic policy responses in addition to commercial measures. For Apple and other platforms, the central question is how federal naming instructions for geographic features translate into consumer-facing software and whether they are applied uniformly for U.S. audiences.
It was not immediately clear from the Deadline report whether Apple had formally announced adoption of the “Lake America” label or whether any rollout would be limited by region, language, or specific Apple services. With the executive action already in place and Google reportedly moving first, Apple’s response is expected to be a key indicator of whether the naming change becomes standardized across mainstream mapping interfaces for American users.
The executive order’s impact is likely to become more visible over time as map providers update their systems and as users encounter the new label in everyday navigation and search. For now, Apple’s position remains under review in response to the White House action, with implementation details dependent on internal product and compliance timelines.
