The German historical drama, which has run for 13 years, concludes its story arc with events leading into Nazi ascent, prompting renewed attention to how the show depicts democratic fragility and public life under strain.
Goodbye to Babylon Berlin is the working title being used in coverage of the long-running German TV drama as it prepares to reach its conclusion with the final season tackling the period of Hitler’s rise to power. The series, which has spent more than a decade dramatizing the politics, culture, and social tensions of 1920s Berlin, is set to move from the show’s earlier portraits of Weimar experimentation toward the historical turning points that ushered in authoritarian rule.
In the announcement and accompanying reporting, The Guardian frames the end of the series as the latest stage of a production that has spent years interweaving crime-and-investigation storytelling with an account of how a young democratic system can be tested by instability, polarizing rhetoric, and competing visions of national identity. The piece says the series offered audiences a blend of “chaotic hedonism” and political reckoning, with the creators increasingly drawing parallels between the Weimar moment and contemporary politics.
The coverage describes the final stretch as arriving at the era in which Hitler’s rise becomes central to the plot, making the show’s historical endpoint its clearest confrontation with the collapse of democratic norms. The Guardian’s account emphasizes that the final season represents a deliberate narrative completion for a program that has relied on expansive world-building, public institutions, and the pressures of mass politics to drive its characters and conflicts.
The Guardian also notes that the series has been running for 13 years, positioning the conclusion as a rare case of a prestige drama spanning multiple audience generations. It characterizes the show’s approach as ambitious in scope, including portrayals of political life as something experienced through daily institutions and public culture rather than only through formal government channels.
As the series reaches its endpoint, the attention is shifting not only to how the show depicts the past, but to how its creators and viewers are reading it in the present. The Guardian describes the creators reflecting on “unsettling parallels” between Weimar Germany and current political conditions, an angle that places the conclusion of the storyline within a broader media conversation about how entertainment can mirror governance breakdowns and social polarization.
Because the series’ end coincides with a historically charged period, public reception may be shaped by concerns about taste, proportionality, and the depiction of political violence. The Guardian framing indicates the show’s final season is expected to continue engaging that history directly, even as it remains a fictional drama built around character stories, not a documentary or textbook treatment.
The next stage for audiences is the release of the final season and the resolution of the show’s ongoing character arcs as the plot aligns with major historical developments associated with Nazi ascent. The series’ conclusion will likely also influence how streaming and television platforms catalog and recommend the program, as well as how critics and viewers assess the long-term impact of its depiction of political instability across its 13-year run.
