Paris-based mk2 films has acquired international sales rights to Carlos Reygadas’ long-awaited feature “Heil Jupiter!,” with a world premiere scheduled for late September at the New York Film Festival.
Carlos Reygadas’ long-awaited feature film “Heil Jupiter!” has secured an international sales agreement with Paris-based mk2 films, the companies announced ahead of the movie’s world premiere at the New York Film Festival in late September. The distribution plan centers on mk2 films handling international sales for the project as it approaches its first public festival appearance.
The deal marks a new commercial milestone for Reygadas, a filmmaker known for slow-burn, concept-forward work that has taken years between releases. “Heil Jupiter!” is billed as Reygadas’ first feature since “Our Time” (2018), returning him to the long-feature format after a gap that has built anticipation among festival audiences and industry buyers.
In its announcement, mk2 films described the project as “a visionary cinematic experience and a nightmarish reflection,” language that frames the film as both immersive and unsettling. The characterization is positioned as part of the film’s presentation to international buyers rather than as a trailer-level plot summary.
The upcoming New York Film Festival premiere is expected to serve as the launching point for the movie’s international rollout, with festival attendance and press coverage typically shaping early buyer interest. The late-September timing places “Heil Jupiter!” inside the NYFF calendar, where international sales teams often finalize deals and package further territories for later release windows.
For mk2 films, the acquisition reinforces its role as a sales and distribution-focused company with a track record of representing international art-house directors at major markets and festivals. The company’s rights acquisition also provides a centralized sales channel for territories outside the film’s premiere setting.
Reygadas’ return with a new feature has also highlighted the broader reality of long development cycles in contemporary festival cinema. Buyers typically weigh production timing, festival readiness, and director brand when negotiating rights, particularly when a project is built around a specific festival premiere date.
With international sales now in place, the next step for “Heil Jupiter!” will be its NYFF bow later in September, followed by the range of downstream distribution arrangements that often follow a successful festival screening. The mk2 films deal is designed to support that transition from premiere to international release planning.
The announcement does not detail further territory-by-territory distribution schedules, but it clarifies that mk2 films holds international sales rights at this stage. Reygadas’ new feature, therefore, is moving from the anticipation phase into the commercial and festival circuit that can determine how quickly it reaches audiences in different markets.
