Ronnie Schell, a frequent TV character actor best known for portraying Pvt. Duke Slater on the 1960s sitcom, died of natural causes at UCLA Hospital in Los Angeles, his family said.
Ronnie Schell, the prolific television character actor perhaps best known for his role as Pvt. Duke Slater on the 1960s sitcom Gomer Pyle: U.S.M.C., died of natural causes in Los Angeles on June 12. He was 94. Schell’s death was announced by his family, according to Deadline, which reported that he died at UCLA Hospital.
In Gomer Pyle: U.S.M.C., Schell played the amiable Duke Slater, a friend and fellow serviceman to the show’s central character, Gomer Pyle, portrayed by Jim Nabors. The series ran in the 1960s and was built around military life and the daily interactions of the men stationed together.
Deadline’s report also noted that Schell was one of the program’s recognizable supporting performers, part of a recurring ensemble that included other major cast members such as Frank Sutton, whose role on the show is reflected in the production’s credited imagery. Schell’s work in the series helped give the character of Duke Slater a steady presence, often positioned as a conversational counterpart to the show’s more wide-eyed humor.
Born Ronald Schell, he maintained a long career as a character actor across television, and Deadline described him as “prolific” in the medium. While the report emphasized his most widely recognized sitcom role, it also framed his death within the context of a broader body of screen work.
The family announcement did not, according to the report, include funeral arrangements or additional biographical details such as surviving relatives or services. Additional information may be released by the family or through public memorial notices in the coming days.
For audiences, Schell’s passing marks the loss of a performer associated with one of the era’s most familiar military-themed comedy programs. The show continues to be referenced in pop-culture retrospectives because of its recognizable cast and recurring character dynamics, and Schell’s Duke Slater remains one of the series’ named supporting figures.
No public statement from a studio or network was included in Deadline’s report, and there was no immediate information provided about posthumous distribution, tributes, or any planned program schedule changes related to his death.
