“Buddy” and “Colony” are among the new titles landing for specialty runs, while documentary “Boorman And The Devil” and other limited offerings continue the end-of-summer slate.
The penultimate weekend of summer brings a mix of new releases to theaters, with specialty previews highlighting a dark comedy feature and a Korean thriller, alongside several limited openings that include documentary work and additional independent titles. The lineup, highlighted for audiences seeking non-mainstream programming, includes the dark comedy “Buddy,” the thriller “Colony,” and limited releases that also cover documentary and drama content.
“Buddy,” a new comedy positioned as dark, is scheduled as part of the weekend theater push for audiences looking for genre-leaning material rather than wide-release fare. The film is distributed in the United States by Roadside Attractions, according to the preview materials.
On the thriller side, “Colony” arrives from Korean filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho, known for directing “Train To Busan,” and it is presented as a new project from the same creative track that also includes the superhero film “Legend Of The White Dragon.” The preview notes that both “Train To Busan” and “Legend Of The White Dragon” were released in the U.S. through Well Go USA, and it frames “Colony” within that established distribution relationship.
The preview describes “Colony” as a zombie-themed thriller and as a Korean production. For viewers interested in genre hybrids, the project is being marketed as moving beyond pure horror into suspense, with specialty exhibition treated as a fit for audiences who follow international genre cinema.
The specialty weekend also includes documentary “Boorman And The Devil,” described in the preview as a hit for theaters. The film centers on filmmaker John Boorman, and the preview places it among the other limited releases opening during the same window.
In addition to those anchor titles, the weekend slate includes other limited releases referenced in the preview, such as “Idiots” and “Finding Emily,” which are listed alongside “Buddy” and “Colony.” Another title mentioned is “The Cycle Of Love,” also described as part of the limited-release mix for the weekend.
Together, the releases reflect a common end-of-summer strategy for specialty distributors: pairing genre-focused international programming with dark comedies and documentary selections, then building audience access through limited theater runs rather than relying on broad opening tactics.
As theaters prepare for the weekend, the practical effect for moviegoers is a more targeted set of showtimes and formats, with “Buddy,” “Colony,” and “Boorman And The Devil” among the titles most directly positioned for audiences seeking darker comedy and thriller material or documentary programming during the closing stretch of the season.
