President Trump accused NBC News’ Meet the Press moderator Kristen Welker of making an improper remark and said he will seek FCC action after the FCC is already defending itself in litigation tied to alleged regulatory retaliation.
President Trump said Sunday that he plans to report NBC News’ Meet the Press moderator Kristen Welker to the Federal Communications Commission, framing his request as a response to what he called a “rebuke or punishment.” The remarks came amid a broader legal fight over the FCC’s regulatory posture, including a lawsuit that alleges retaliation connected to the way broadcasters covered the president and his political activities.
The dispute centers on comments Welker made during NBC News programming about Trump’s endorsement record, according to the report. Trump said he would ask the FCC to take action over the remark, describing it as deserving of enforcement review rather than routine broadcast criticism.
The FCC’s position, as described in the report, is that the regulator has acted lawfully and is defending its approach in ongoing litigation. That litigation was brought by ABC, which alleges that the FCC engaged in regulatory retaliation, and the FCC is contesting those claims as the case proceeds.
The report places Trump’s planned FCC complaint against the backdrop of the ABC lawsuit, raising the stakes for broadcasters because the FCC’s decisions can affect licensing, enforcement posture, and compliance burdens. For media organizations, even a complaint does not automatically mean an enforcement action will follow, but it can trigger filings, staff time, and additional legal review.
The FCC operates through an administrative process that can include requests for investigation, written responses by the parties, and determinations about whether alleged conduct violates communications rules or conditions tied to broadcasting obligations. Any action Trump seeks would therefore be subject to the agency’s procedures and any applicable statutory or regulatory standards.
For viewers and employers, the episode also underscores the friction between presidential statements about coverage and the FCC’s role in adjudicating broadcast-related issues. In practice, these disputes can shape newsroom risk management, particularly when on-air remarks are scrutinized through the lens of fairness, accuracy, or other regulatory criteria referenced by complainants.
No details were provided in the report about specific allegations beyond the complaint’s basis in Welker’s comment or about the exact form or timing of Trump’s FCC submission. It was also not stated what relief Trump is seeking beyond the notion of a “rebuke or punishment,” leaving the next step dependent on how the FCC processes any new filing and whether it is consolidated with or treated separately from the pending lawsuit.
The report described the FCC as already defending itself in the ABC case, meaning the agency’s handling of Trump’s complaint may come under additional attention as the courts and regulated entities consider whether any enforcement or investigatory decisions are justified under communications law and FCC policy.
